How to judge garage door dealers

Choose a garage door dealer

It’s unwise to pay too much, but even worse to pay too little!

Wise words… and you may have heard it at least once… And it also holds true when the important time comes to shop around for a brand new garage door system, which includes the door itself, its hardware, and an electric garage door opener. At the same time, a little voice in our heads warns us to be careful, that there will always be someone who would like to do the job more cheaply, tempting you to do business with them. But keep in mind – paying less mean getting less… less experience, lower product quality and less after‑sales service.

A garage door with a quoted price significantly lower than other written or verbal quotes you requested will often have a short lifespan and may require more frequent service calls than expected. As well, it could happen that getting a defective component replaced by this “cheapest alternative” company becomes difficult once your last payment has been made.

Conversely, if you feel that a price is decidedly higher when compared to other prices seen in flyers or on the Internet, this is the time to get down to the real nuts and bolts of the product. Ask questions. Show interest in learning about the whole system. This way you can see if you’ve found a real garage door professional and not some fly‑by‑night operator. Your goal is to get a quality product that lasts a long time.

Learn about the company you want to do business

Unfortunately, there do exist pop‑up companies with less than stellar reputations and not many years in the business. As most of us buy only one or two garage doors in our lives, it’s crucial to know who we are doing business with.

Some tips: don’t be shy to ask to see and visit homes the dealer has completed, especially if some of them are located nearby. Go ahead and question these homeowners about their level of satisfaction. Do they recommend the dealer without hesitation?

Next, make sure that the garage door dealer you are about to do business with has whatever mandatory state or provincial licenses in order. In addition, does this dealer have valid liability and professional insurance? If they belong to a garage door industry association, be assured that they must adhere to a code of ethics. Have them show you any of the licenses or certificates just mentioned.

Take a close look at the level of service you receive

A company specialized in the sales, installation and service of garage doors is never reluctant to be honest and straightforward, without boasting. As they say, you should judge a tree by its fruit, not by its appearance. Just because a business shows a fleet of shiny trucks on its website, don’t assume this is the true situation.

The best way to evaluate them is to pay them a visit. If their warehouse and showroom are neat and organized, it is a good indication that this company is conscientious and thorough, and you will get the same treatment.

The garage door dealer you choose must be able to react quickly to service calls. Do they have enough service vehicles to completely cover your area? Enough to provide you with a prompt installation? Do the service trucks have adequate replacement parts to react to unexpected situations? Answers to these questions should give you an accurate idea of service you will receive.
