You can use your garage as a scrapbooking workshop

Garage Workshop

Most of the time, we think of the garage as a place to park our car, or instead a spot reserved for a DIY or amateur mechanic’s workshop. Who says it can’t be turned into a scrapbooking studio?

Here is a checklist to ensure you have all you need for this transformation. And just imagine, on those warm summer days, you can open the garage door to let your neighbors see what you’ve crafted and maybe even buy some of your masterpieces.

What needs to be done before starting

Here is a list of the work to be done to get just the workshop you want.

Storage Space With Shelves

However, before buying anything, accurately measure your available space before sketching out your ideal layout, then build or buy what you need.

  • Lighting

This is first because it’s the most important. Everything with turn out better if you can avoid wrong color choices or inappropriate contrasts. As well, no one wants headaches from working with improper lighting. You need to consider the overall lighting in the garage in addition to any supplemental lighting for your worktable. If you are one of those who do their scrapbooking at night, you will be more productive if you invest in good lighting. For daytime work, light from any windows should be evaluated because you might need to block it out with curtains or shade.

  • Electricity

Depending on how many outlets you have, see if you need to add others more strategically located. Have the work done by a qualified electrician. Avoid overloading sockets by connecting several devices at the same time. Also, avoid using extension cords. Any electrical tool shouldn’t have a cord longer than 5 feet (1.5 meters). Above all, do not place an electric cord under a mat unless the cord is grounded.

  • Worktable

Ideally, the largest table you can manage will the most practical. Its surface area should be at least 3 ft2 (3 m2). You’ll get the best results if the surface is smooth and easy to clean with a damp cloth. Another piece of advice is to keep only those items used in one specific project on the table at a time.

  • Shelves and storage space

As pointed out above, since your worktable should only contain the items you are currently using, make sure you have enough storage space for the other materials you have. Shelves can be open or closed, you can even use wire shelving. Boxes, baskets and jars are perfect for various size supplies. Work with the budget you have now, keeping a “wish list” of improvements if funds become available in the future. Make maximum use of the walls that are available, installing pegboard to hang tools and supplies.

  • Your work chair

A point that must not be overlooked. Very often you’ll need to work sitting down. Ensure your chair is adjustable and swivels, is on wheels and has a multi-position backrest to fit your body.

  • Flooring

Think about your comfort and use a rug that is big enough for you to move your chair around your worktable.

  • Heating and ventilation

If your garage is well-insulated and there is supplementary heating, make sure it is adequate for the coldest days in the winter. If you need to use many aerosol products, also consider a way to properly ventilate the place. Slightly opening a window and your garage door may be sufficient to create a draft for your workspace.

There are certainly other aspects to examine closer based on your actual garage setup. Many craftspeople have their own personal preferences. But don’t panic. Go step by step, and your garage will become the comfortable and inspirational place you need to create your best work.
