This isn’t one of life’s great questions, so most likely it doesn’t come up… unless you’re thinking about buying a new garage door system, or a spring you have breaks.

With the power and scope of the Internet, all sorts of claims are made that sound quite true and which we often don’t take the time to verify. This deceptive information can even extend to garage door systems.

There’s nothing more upsetting than finding rust spots on your garage door that’s only a few years old, and, hey, wasn’t it supposed to be protected with high quality paint?

Are you the owner of a small service or construction company and have a garage for storing your tools and equipment? The door for this type of garage is most likely 10 feet wide and 12 feet high and not in the residential category. Even if you only use as many times a day as one at home, that is about 4 times a day, it still needs regular care.

One way or another, a garage door opener won’t last forever, or more precisely, always give you the level of operation you desire. Certainly, how often it is used will play a role.

How do you think of your garage? Or do you even think about it? Sure, it’s where you park your car to keep it out of the elements, pack away your patio furniture and protect your tools and mower. But worry about it? Give it more than a passing thought? Think about improvements? Probably not. Out of sight, out of mind.

Wise words… and you may have heard it at least once… And it also holds true when the important time comes to shop around for a brand new garage door system, which includes the door itself, its hardware, and an electric garage door opener. At the same time, a little voice in our heads warns us to be careful, that there will always be someone who would like to do the job more cheaply, tempting you to do business with them. But keep in mind – paying less mean getting less… less experience, lower product quality and less after-sales service.

Just like with a car, we often get used to small noises or irregularities with our garage door. If the door opener seems to be working correctly, we tend to ignore small sounds. However, with a car, we all know that regular tune-ups are highly recommended regardless if it seems to be running properly.

We all have a good idea of the size of a residential garage door. When we talk about single doors, they are most often 8 or 9 ft. wide by 7 or 8 ft. high. For a double garage door, the width can vary between 14 to 16 or even 18 ft. wide. However, is this sufficient for a sports utility vehicle (SUV) or a recreational vehicle (RV)? As widths are fairly standard for SUVs, it is a question of height for them, while for an RV, there is a good chance that an 8′-high door might not be enough.

One of those devices of daily life that we take for granted could be our garage door opener. Every morning, we press on the remote, the door opens, and we pull out of the garage. But did you ever stop to think exactly what goes into this operation?
